Goodbye to a friend

A very special man has left this world; a man who showed all who knew him the true meaning of courageousness, selflessness, and strength.
We will miss Doug’s smile, his laugh, and his friendship, but he will live in our memories always.

“If it wasn’t for the storms that passed through our lives we would never know the complete and solid feeling of contentment and accomplishment brought on by our walk of blind faith into tomorrow’s path”

Tonia & Chris visit Asheville

Our good friends Chris and Antonia decided to escape Florida’s Summer heat, and take a little  vacation. Antonia’s birthday was June 16, and she had told Chris that all she wanted for her birthday was a trip to Asheville! The two of them arrived Friday, after a 3 hour delay in Atlanta, and the nonstop fun began. Though Vinnie and I were happy to see the two of them, no one was happier than Mighty to see Antonia!

On Saturday, after a gut busting breakfast downtown at the infamous Tupelo Honey Cafe, we headed off to Dupont State Forest, located in Transylvania County (no kidding!), a 45 minute drive southwest of Asheville. That part of North Carolina is know as the land of the waterfalls, and Dupont State Forest has four pretty spectacular examples.

After a few hours of hiking, which included having to seek refuge in a covered bridge after an afternoon thunderstorm popped up, we headed back  home for a siesta. Later that evening we went to Tony & Tim’s incredible new house for Antonia’s suprise birthday dinner/party. Vinnie and I were in charge of the guest list, which included Harry, David, Rick, George, Steve, Bob, Doug, Bill, Joe, and Ken. Tony must have been cooking all day; the spread of food was absolutely delicious, and very plentiful! Although Antonia & Chris did not know most of the guests when they arrived, by the time they left they had made many new friends!!

Sunday was whitewater rafting day on the French Broad River. The weather was not very promising on the drive to Blue Heron Whitewater; thunder, lightning, and lot’s of rain. When we arrived at Blue Heron, the temperature was 64 degrees, and all of us were concerned about being cold and wet out on the water.  The staff working there told us they had plenty of gear to keep us dry, and that the river was running  fast (4000 c.f.s.), which would make for a fun trip. As soon as we got to the launching point, the rain stopped, the sun came out, and off came the rain gear! Our guides Sandy, the owner of Blue Heron Whitewater, and Jen, were such a wealth of interesting facts about the French Broad, and made this rafting experience one of the best ever!

After rafting, we headed home to relax for an hour before heading over to our friend Ken’s property in the Reems Creek area of Weaverville for a casual get together. Ken is building what will be a beautiful home in the woods. Although the house isn’t finished, Ken does have all the necessities for a cookout: a grill, picnic table, a fire pit, and running water from a hose. We of course brought one of the other necessities; vodka!! Shortly after the sun went down, hundreds of lightning bugs appeared to add ambiance to our relaxation by the fire.
On Monday, Vinnie & I both had to work, so Antonia & Chris spent the day exploring some of the sights of Asheville. That night we dined at one of our favorite downtown restaurants, Bouchon. Monday nights they have all you can eat mussels, with an order of pomme frites, for $14, and 1/2 price bottles of house wine!

Tuesday brought with it more adventure; ziplining at Navitat! Navitat opened last year in Barnardsville, NC, a short 15 minute drive from our house. Even though I am not a big fan of heights, the 3 hours we spent zipping through trees, and rapelling 2o feet down from a trees, was nothing short of exhilerating! Navitat is rated as one of the best ziplining courses in the U.S., and they are opening another location soon near Big Bear, an hour and a half northeast of Los Angeles. Next time we’re in Southern California, we’ll definitely check ot out! Another great day spent in the beautiful Blueridge Mountains of North Carolina.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and Wednesday was the end of Tonia & Chris’visit with us. After lunch at The Laughing Seed, arguably one of the best vegetarian restaurants anywhere, it was off to the airport. We will hold on to the great memories of Tonia & Chris’time here, until their next visit. I hope that one day, in the not to distant future, that I will be writing a post called “Chris & Tonia move to Asheville”!!!

Are we in Tuscany????

Four years ago while we were vacationing in Italy, Marc took us on a special day trip; a trip I know we will all have fond memories of for years to come. That trip was to Il Giardino Del Tarocchi, “The Tarot Gardens”. This is artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s esoteric sculpture garden based on the Tarot cards, located in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The project started in the late ’70′s, and ended when Niki passed away in 2002.
Back to the present day. Vinnie & I made an overnight trip to Charlotte, NC, to visit Vinnie’s sister Lori. After breakfast, and a less than quick trip to IKEA, we ended up downtown at the Bechtler Museum. I found out through some random Internet searching of Charlotte, that the Bechtler was featuring an exhibit of Niki de Saint Phalle. It probably goes without saying, but we were psyched!!! The exhibit, which is not only inside the museum, is also in the garden area.

Win Win…….definitely a winner!

One week ago today, the daytime high temperature in Asheville was 86 degrees. Boy how the weather can change; today it got all the way up to 48 degrees under rainy skies. Though the rain will make the grass grow high, today it prevents it from being mowed!

What better way to spend part of a rainy day than going to see a movie. Vinnie and I decided to check out what was playing at the Fine Arts Theater in downtown Asheville. Win Win, with Paul Giamatti was showing; a movie we had wanted to see since seeing the preview a while back.  Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Giamatti), who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy’s mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.

If you haven’t seen Win Win yet, go see it, you won’t be sorry!

Sleepless in Seattle

What better way to spend my 50th birthday than with family and loved ones in the Emerald City, Seattle Washington. Leslie and Marc were Vinnie’s and my ever gracious, and extremely generous hosts. Lisa joined in the fun Tuesday, flying up from Southern California for a couple of days. Luann was not with us, but she was in spirit!

Birthday dinner at Serious Pie

Eating is always a highlight of our travels, and Seattle certainly has no shortage of wonderful dining options. One of our best meals is one that we prepared with the 10lb. Halibut that we had purchased fresh, earlier in the day from Pike Place Market. Absolutely yummy!

This is Vinnie’s idea of a well rounded meal…a doughnut trio from the infamous Top Pot Doughnuts. Baby Bag of Doughnuts would have been so jealous!

Our friends Frank & Mark invited us to their beautiful home in the Leschi area of Seattle; a stones throw from Lake Washington. It has been several years since we last saw them in Palm Beach, Florida (honestly, that was not meant to sound pretentious!) Mark and Frank have quite a large collection of liquor at their house…must be why we like them!!! Along with a fantastic assortment of tasty appetizers, Mark prepared Osso Bucco, polenta, and sauteed spinach…DELICIOUS!

Thursday afternoon found us at Gavin’s fantastic apartment overlooking the Puget Sound. Gavin and Leslie have been friends for quite a long time; meeting in Los Angeles almost 18 years ago. Gavin’s sister, Kimberly, and her boyfriend Robert were part of the afternoon cocktail group. It was great to see Gavin; it has been almost 11 years! Thanks for the yummy hors d’hoeuvres!

On our last day in Seattle, Leslie & Vinnie informed me that they had one last surprise for me. All I needed to do was be dressed and ready to get in the car by 10:30am. My first thought was that we were going to get massages; but when we were driving through this unusual industrial type area, I started hoping that I had guessed wrong! We pulled into a parking area at Boeing Field that housed several helicopter and airplane charter companies. That’s when Les & Vinnie let me know that we were going on a helicopter tour of Seattle. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. The skies were crystal clear, and blue as blue could be! We had a really cool, super knowledgeable young guy, probably 25 years old, as our pilot. The tour lasted 30 minutes, but the memory will last a lifetime!

If Tables Could Talk

Wow, we’d all be in serious trouble right John?

This is the famous dining room table at our house on Old State Road in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Famous only because we spent so much time there, it really was the center of the house in a very very non-traditional way!

Yes, this is where the dreaded Sunday night dinners (that almost always ended up in a huge fight between our parents..) played many a game of Scrabble or Gin Rummy and ate many many a delicious meal (I remember the chicken cacciatore especially, it was always such a production!). Also this is where as teenagers we did some “illegal substances” of varying degrees – what can we say, we were young right?

I’m not sure what fashion statement we’re making with the hats, one can only imagine. but we did look a tad better than our Phoenixville days, right? In a way you could say we almost grew up at this table – and somehow we always managed to have fun!

Sensational Siblings

These days we don’t have a ton of pictures of us all together and even this one dates back to 2002! The reason we all look so happy and drunk (yes, this time there actually is a reason!) is that we are at Lisa and Neil’s wedding in Philadelphia! And what a big adventure that was for everyone! There was a big cycling event going on in Philly which Lisa and Neil would attend, Leslie and Marc had just relocated back to the US from Switzerland, Lu and John had flown in from Florida and good friends Joe and Kitty drove down from NYC for a mini Los Angeles in the ’80′s reunion! Can anyone say DEVO?

Speaking of reunion, we also saw lots of blasts from the pasts – Alan Donatone, Dana Mackey, Aunt Gloria and Uncle Sam etc etc. Lu had commandeered the floral arrangements which included tons of fresh lemons – I remember we worked on them right to the zero hour!

Aside from the gorgeous wedding of Lisa and Neil, that weekend was filled with running around the historic streets of Philadelphia, visiting rival cheesesteak houses, I even remember getting a dozen doughnuts to take up to Lisa and Neil’s room with it’s great view of the street with the bike race.

We had a blast! In fact, when we’re all together we usually do!

Social Services Anyone?

Some childhood pictures are a tad embarrassing but this hat trick makes you wonder if anyone was even taking care of us!!!! We are one motley crew! Common Mom, did you really let us out of the house looking like this?

Ok, blame it on the ’70′s – that might have something to do with it, no one was looking too good back then but still you have to wonder….and I’m just hoping Lisa’s teeth fell out naturally? Just kidding but heck, you never know! I won’t even go into who did or didn’t cut out hair!

So for all you parents out there if you have funky looking kids there is a ray of hope! One this is for sure, our looks may have changed but our “silliness factor” certainly didn’t!!!

Norristown Nuptials

A big part of our social life growing up was visiting our cousins in Norristown. I loved that all my dad’s brothers and sisters married Italians so we had a ton of dark haired big brown eyed cousins for us to play with! We would usually go to to Sam and Gloria Barrone’s house in Norristown and then Aunt Esther and Uncle Sam would stop by and Uncle Alex and who knows who else. We had a blast and always ate something yummy (often spaghetti prepared by Gloria).

This picture shows us at cousin Maria’s wedding and unfortunately I have no idea what year this is. I do know she married John and she is still married to him! Lisa looks like she is getting the scoop from somebody, John looks like he is scheming something and I have more paint on than a stolen truck! That silver fox is our Uncle Sam – he always scared us – I think he actually enjoyed intimidating little kids! And that’s Uncle Alex in the back, not sure what he’s looking at…..

A few tables over sat a different set of siblings: our dad Gus and his sisters Esther and Gloria. Boy, do they look like they know how to have fun. NOT!!!!!!!! I wonder how long it took Gus to choose that outfit? Wow, this is a wedding isn’t it? (I bet my mom was pissed!) Esther is definitely giving the don’t “f’ with me look which she apparently has down to a science and Gloria looks like the cat has her tongue!

We’ll probably never know or remember what was going on at this wedding, too bad no one took movies back then (that’s what they were called, movies not video!). Good news is that almost all of our cousins, including the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware clan are on Facebook.
